Ioannina Castle

The Archaeological Museum of Ioannina

The new permanent exhibition includes almost 3,000 archaeological finds from all over Epirus. Exhibits encompass a wide chronological period, extending from man’s first appearance in Epirus 250,000 years ago down to the Late Roman period (3rd c. AD).

The Silversmithing Museum

Located in the castle of Ioannina, in the western bastion of the northeastern acropolis (Its Kale).

It is a thematic museum, as it concerns the technology of silversmithing during the pre-industrial period, while simultaneously being a regional museum, as it focuses principally on the history of silversmithing in the region of Epirus.

The Byzantine Museum of Ioannina

Located inside the Castle of Ioannina, in the southeast acropolis known as Its Kale.

The Cave of Perama

4 kilometres from the city of Ioannina.

A three-storey palace, with incomparable beauty and wonderful ornaments, which is among the most beautiful in the Balkans, was created by nature in the bowels of Goritsa hill, which crowns the picturesque village of Perama. The ornaments chosen by nature for this were one of the most beautiful and richest. It lists 19 species of stalactites and stalagmites, while in other caves there are 6-10 species at most.

The Archaeological site of Dodona

About 20 km southwest of Ioannina in the narrow valley between the mounts Tomaros and Manoliassa.

The archaeological site of Dodona comprises the sanctuary of Zeus and the Acropolis. Located at the foot of the hill, the sanctuary is surrounded by an enclosure; the acropolis occupies the hilltop.

Pavlos Vrellis Greek History Museum – Wax Museum

The museum is located on one of the main roads at the entrance of the city of Ioannina and is easily accessible with ample parking.

It was set up by the sculptor Pavlos Vrellis in February 1983 and is the best-known wax museum in Greece.

Fethiye Mosque

The Fethiye Mosque (Mosque of the Conqueror) is located on the southeastern section (İts Kale) of the citadel of Ioannina, near the Byzantine Museum.

Museum of Ali Pasha & Revolutionary Period – Island

The Museum is located on the small and picturesque island of Pamvotis Lake.

The exhibition includes amazing works of art from the 17th century to the beginning of the 20th century, folk costumes, paintings, lithographs, and objects of folklore interest, etc. as well as unique exhibits such as Ali Pasa’s famous gold-plated flintlock (kariofili).

Kahal Kadosh Yashan Synagogue

The Kahal Kadosh Yashan Synagogue is located inside the walled Castro, near the main gate.

The original structure of the synagogue probably dates to the Byzantine period. It is not clear whether it was constructed on the site of an earlier synagogue or if it is the first official house of worship of the Ioannina Jews.

Theodoros Papagiannis Museum of Contemporary Art 

The “Theodoros Papagiannis” Museum of Contemporary Art is located at Elliniko, Ioannina, in the Municipality of Katsanochoria.

A unique museum at Ellinikon village, the birthplace of the internationally well-known Greek sculptor Theodoros Papagiannis.
